The DD Club of Amherst is a registered student organization that is creating a campus-wide initiative of getting people to drive other people home late at night. We started the group as a small solution to the hardships of transportation, the prevention of drunk driving, and the creation of safety and security on the University of Massachusetts campus.
Our goals and programs have changed from year to year, but our mission to make our University a better and safer place has always stayed the same.
In years past, we would recruit volunteers who would help drive people to and from places until 3AM. Cab services usually ran only until midnight, and bus routes to specific parts of campus and town stopped early or were non-existent.
We would advocate our program through meetings, flyers, and community events such as bake sales. Our bake sales, as well as donations, were our main source of funding.
Our group is currently pushing for the implementation of dorm-sized programs where volunteers could sign up and give rides to people in their dormitory and/or area. We are hoping that the program can be organized through the residence directors, creating a permanent system of getting students home late at night.
Our group is also involved in adding other transportation needs of students, such as ridesharing an carpooling.
